Kung Fu Panda. Maybe Kung Fu Pigs instead?

October 17th, 2008
This post is old. I mean really old. I wrote it back when the movie was in the theaters. Yea, I know I am a little late, but I didn’t want to make any trouble while the Olympics were going on…. Okay. I admit it I am lazy, but the DVD comes out in about a month, so this is some what relevant.
Friday night I took my daughter to see Kung Fu Panda, which was a lot better than I thought it would be. (The previews left a stench in the theater when I first saw them.) While we were chomping our pop corn, a peculiar trend came to light, all of the villagers were pigs. All of the main characters were different animals like tigers, snake, monkey, rhinos, but the common people were all pigs. When this comes out on DVD pay attention.
So what is the message here? That the Chinese people are mindless herd? You have to be different in order to succeed? Or is it something much more subtle. I believe it was probably easier (cheaper) to animate the same character over and over.
